Behavior Plan
As Principal for Pinellas Preparatory Academy, I was lucky to have a wonderful group of students and families who supported the education we provided at the school. For the most part, our students were very well behaved. However, middle school students will still be middle school students, and occasionally behavioral issues to interrupt the education. In 2006-07 I started a Behavioral Team among the staff who focused on developing a comprehensive behavioral program that addressed how best to assist our students to be more successful.
The committee began by addressing the needs of the school, and the issues we were having. The committee addressed the need to let parents know more effectively what was happening at school, and a way of more thoroughly documenting what was happening at school. As a result, the committee developed a process which utilized both “COAs” (Consequence of Actions) and Referrals.
As a result of the committees decision, I developed a student management system that allowed teachers to issue “COAs” to students, which automatically emailed parents, and allowed us to improve both documentation and communication. Below are some of the work samples from the work the behavioral team has done under my leadership.
- Think It Over Form - Used during 2005-06 and 2006-07 as a way to for students to reflect on incidents
- Principles Poster – Developed as part of our work in 2006-07, this poster summarizes the character traits we focus on a PPA
- Behavior Forms – Developed as part of our work in 2006-07, these are the forms used as part of the behavior program
- Behavior Policies Information for Parents – Explanation and forms sent home to parents the summer of 2009
- Appeal Process Policies – Policies I wrote for the appeal process for behavioral referrals
